Our First RV Adventure: From Rookie Moves to Rolling Memories in Ontario’s Provincial Parks
If you’ve ever Googled “best places to visit in Ontario” or “RV rentals near me”, welcome to the adventure we actually lived through. Spoiler alert: It involves loud noises, rookie mistakes, beautiful trails, and a whole lot of grey water.
We recently planned our very first RV trip across Ontario, starting with picking up a Jayco Greyhawk Class C RV through RVShare, a super convenient peer-to-peer rental platform. Our chosen rig was sitting pretty in Whitby, just a short drive from Toronto. With zero prior RV experience, we loaded up with excitement… and zero clue what we were doing.
Destination: Presqu’ile Provincial Park, Ontario
Our route was simple and scenic: Toronto > Whitby > Presqu’ile Provincial Park, one of Ontario’s hidden coastal gems. Located on the shores of Lake Ontario, Presqu’ile is famous for its beach trails, bird-watching, and surprisingly clean washrooms.

The campground setup is a dream for both beginners and seasoned explorers.

The First Mistake: Water Filling Woes
Right before entering the park, we stopped to fill 5 gallons of fresh water manually because… well, we weren’t sure how much was in the tank. Cue our first rookie move: carrying giant jugs like ancient nomads. (Pro tip: Ask the owner how full the tank is before pickup.)
The Great Generator Scream
Lesson #2: Never, ever turn on the RV generator when you’re already plugged into an electrical source. We learned this the loud way—think jet-engine decibels. The entire campground got a free wake-up call. We sheepishly turned it off and made a mental note: RVs are simple machines, but they do not like mixed signals.
Propane, Panels, and Mysterious Meters
After fumbling with propane switches, fridge settings, and reading all the mysterious battery and tank levels, we finally got the hang of it. The Jayco Greyhawk Class C is surprisingly user-friendly once you stop panicking. Its interior was spacious enough for four, with a queen bed, over-cab bunk, and full kitchenette—plus a bathroom that doesn’t make you miss home.
Packing, Unpacking & Getting RV-Ready
Packing the RV was like playing Tetris with coolers, backpacks, and flip-flops. The built-in storage on the Jayco helped a lot. Unpacking? Slightly less fun—especially when trying to remember which cabinet the ketchup ended up in.
Cleaning the RV and using its onboard washroom felt surprisingly civilized. It’s not camping; it’s glamping on wheels.
Let’s Talk Black and Grey Water
Before returning the RV, we had to dispose of the grey and black water tanks. Presqu’ile’s disposal area was well-marked and easy to use. Trust us, it sounds grosser than it is. Anyone with basic instructions can do it (even us, clearly). Gloves, a hose, and a deep breath—you’re good to go.
Returning the Beast
The final stretch: we cleaned, checked all switches, and returned the Jayco Greyhawk to Whitby. A bit of a bittersweet goodbye. We were officially no longer RV rookies.
