First Stamp on my passport – Saudi Arabia

The First Stamp

  1. I was a Graduate Engineering Trainee when my manager Ashu Chauhan assigned me to Saudi Arabia. It would be the first stamp in my passport — and the beginning of everything.

Landing in Riyadh

I arrived to discover a telecommunications landscape where MMS was the king of communication. Before WhatsApp, before social media proliferated, multimedia messaging was how people shared photos, jokes, and celebrations.

Working with telecom operators STC and Zain, I spent my days analyzing MMSC logs and probes to optimize value-added services. The technical work was demanding but deeply educational.

The Mentor

My mentor Absar Khan imparted lessons that went far beyond technical knowledge. He taught me to:

"Think clearly when the room is on fire."

And the most important lesson:

"Confidence isn't loud. It's calm."

Those words shaped how I approach every crisis, every client meeting, every impossible deadline since.

Life on the Ground

I lived in a company compound and witnessed the impressive scale of operations — the Nokia Tatweer Tower, STC's extensive facilities. I rented my first left-hand drive vehicle without hesitation and navigated unfamiliar streets with more confidence than skill.

And yes, during India-Pakistan cricket matches, the tension was palpable — even in professional settings.

People, Not Prompts

Here's what I think about most when I look back:

"Back in those days, we learned people — not prompts."

Before AI-assisted communication, professionals built interpersonal skills through direct conversation and occasional social awkwardness. Today's reliance on engineered prompts may save time, but it sacrifices the authenticity of human connection.

What It Meant

That assignment transcended employment. It represented professional growth, personal self-discovery, and the beginning of a career that would take me across continents.

Every passport starts with a first stamp. Mine happened to be in Riyadh.
